Creating art during rainy days.

It’s been pretty dreary here lately. Between the Covid-19 pandemic and the cold rainy weather, it’s been tough. My house is always too cold for me, I can’t go outside because it’s even colder, there is no sunshine and I have little time for myself.

It’s tough, and I know it’s even tougher for others in more complicated situations. I feel that I can be upset for 5 minutes but shouldn’t hang on that because my life is pretty darn good when I look for the things I can be grateful for.

To counter all the grey around me, I try to create art that reminds me of the warm weather and spring.

The first one I made was a set of watercolor tiny paintings. Each small painting was made with a watercolor wash in the background and a micron pen for the doodle. I ended up with 6 paintings that represent the lightness and airiness of spring. A tree that is full of leaves, the skyline of the city with a clear sky full of stars, flowers and plants swinging in a spring breeze.

My next Spring inspired piece was a vase with lavender in it. Lavender is actually more of a summer blossom, really at it’s peak early summer. A few years ago I went to a local lavender farm and cut my own stalks of French Lavender. I dried them and they are still sitting on a vase next to my desk. They still smell amazing!

Creating this piece took me right back to the summer afternoon when we went there. The smell of lavender was intense when we first arrived. It was like swimming in a pool of lavender oil! There were lots of bees flying around too, and it was a good lesson on how pollinators like them don’t care about humans as long as you leave them alone.

These are only the last 2 things I made. The pandemic has thrown my routine completely off the rails and I need to use small pockets of time to create art. I continue pushing through, though at a much slower speed.

How do you bring spring vibes into your life when the weather doesn’t help? Hope your days are vibrant and full of inspiration. Until next time!
